I'm studying with the OU, and am unsure of what to do next. I'm working towards a BA with honours in English language and literature, but there's also an option for an 'open' BA without honours, which would be a year's less study.
However, I don't know what this means! I'd like to go into teaching at some point in the future and don't know whether this would affect it or not. Can anyone help? honours degrees e. I too thought that it had something to do with the missing out the year in industry due to having to repeat a year or sitting exam retakes. My without honours graduate son did do his year in industry but then had to repeat his final year due to several weeks of genuine illness and with some lazyitis thrown in after that. He was in line for a first so it's incorrect to presume that it's a lower level. Having said that, can you get a degree without a dissertation, I think it's a good idea to obtain the honours if you have an eye on teaching. I'm sorry, but that's completely wrong. The first, upper second etc are the classes of honours awarded to indicate achievement above the minimum degree requirements. It's logically not possible for a degree awarded without honours - a pass degree - to be rated higher than one that has honours, of whatever grade.

I had 6 exams and a dissertation. I did not achieve the 'hons' bit, so I have a BSc degree in Maths. The lack of 'hons' has never been held against me. elliecat Posts: 9, Forum Member. This is an old thread but anyway. The University I work at classes a final overall mark of as a below honours degree, it is still a pass. It matters not whether you do a dissertation and every student has to do credits every year.
The first year doesn't count so it's a total of credits, and the final mark is worked out adding the marks for all the modules together and then dividing it by and that gives you the weighted average which is the final over all mark, can you get a degree without a dissertation.
The University I went to worked it out the same way, OU may be different though. As my Dad told me when I started university, a degree without honours isn't really worth having, and to be honest, all these years later, I agree with him.
