Although I have read the complete works of Shakespeare, I have never thought of them critically. I have been impressed by the word flows and I have enjoyed the straightforward plots. Reading Tolstoy's criticism has opened a new channel of thought about these plays. He makes very strong arguments for his views even if one does not agree with all of his basic premises.

In total, this is an excellent essay. This is a great book on Shakespeare, a critical essay on shakespeare by leo tolstoy. It gives you a very different perspective on Shakespeare. Makes you question many aspect of his writings. I would read this book twice. Tolstoy reveals the Shakespeare he knew and thus revealed himself. It's often interesting to hear how someone experienced Shakespeare, then wandered off into their own ideas of what it meant to them about what they wanted it to mean.

And a critical essay on shakespeare by leo tolstoy disappointed they sometimes were. When it's Tolstoy doing so, it's often compelling. Though wrong. Very interesting to read a contrarian view of The Bard that goes against the mainstream. In fact Tolstoy is quite negative, and makes a convincing case that Shakespeare pretty much ruined all the earlier works he based his plays on.

One person found this helpful. Even though Tolstoy presents an amazing point about why Shakespeare shouldn't be placed a critical essay on shakespeare by leo tolstoy a position of adoration, I still love Shakespeare just the same. However, anyone who plans to seriously critique any work of Shakespeare for an English class or just for personal reasons- should really read this. Anytime you critique a work, you should see both sides and in this you're able to see a contrasting viewpoint of the "Shakespeare-is-perfection" common opinion.

Tolstoy is one of the world's great writers, plotters, thematic-titian, and philosophers. He must be read later in life to get a different perspective on his work. It will tell you a lot about Tolstoy and nothing about Shakespeare. Just a series of opinions without allowing for differences in taste wordplay and poetry don't count as art, only religious lecturing in LT' s view. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. In my opinion Tolstoy was the greatest novelist of all time.

However, he was not the most sane person and his weird ramblings on ethics and Christianity he believed in total celibacy for everyone, a critical essay on shakespeare by leo tolstoy, thus ending mankind in one generation, but at the same time fathered upteen children himself also mark him out as one of the World's greatest nutcases.

Unfortunately this book consists entirely of those ramblings and, to be honest, he just ends up sounding like a spoilt and jealous child. Report abuse. I was very glad to get this free of charge, and enjoyed reading it. I plan to recommend it to my friends. Thank you. Only a great writer and thinker such as Tolstoy can write a criticism of the greatest acknowledged dramatist and playwright with such a critical essay on shakespeare by leo tolstoy simplicity and hitting conviction that readers began to realize their conflict with Shakespearean literature can't be manifested more bluntly.
